TECHNICAL ISSUES

Precautions

Take note of the following precautions to avoid possible problems and conflicts that may result from these actions.

1. Do not attempt to reinstall the software after the 15-day trial period, intending to use it for free for another 15 days. This will erase all the data you have previously stored with this software. The only way to preserve your data and benefit from the software is to secure your license.

2. Do not install the software with the date of your computer set to a future date, intending to beat the 15-day trial period. This might shorten your trial period if you later change your system date to an earlier date (or the actual current date).

3. Do not attempt to reinstall the software with the intention of using the data from another installation. It's not going to work because the database files created from the other installation contain encrypted data which deny access to data files used with another installation.

4. After each session, always use or press F9 or select Quit on the Main Screen to close the program. Do not turn the computer off while the software is still active or running, because it may result to damage in open files and loss of valuable data. Closing the software other than by pressing F9 on Main Screen may also leave temporary work files on disk that would normally be deleted. This takes up unnecessary disk space for files which have no more use to the software after closing.

However, although the temporary files are not removed when you fail to use F9 to close the program, they would be deleted the next time you use F9.

5. If it is necessary to close the program in the middle of a session (for example, if the program hangs), close the POS window by clicking the Close Button on the upper right corner of the POS window. Use genuine Windows operating system to avoid or minimize this problem.

6. Sometimes, the message YOUR LOG-ON SESSION HAS EXPIRED may appear on screen. This should not cause an alarm, because it is not an error.

7. Don't forget your Admin Password. If you fail to enter the correct Admin Password, you would not be able to access many important features of the software. We can retrieve your Admin Password, but you would pay a service fee that is equivalent to 5% of your original license fee.

8. When an item in your Price List is discontinued, phased out or no longer available for sale, trim down your Price List by deactivating the item. This will not remove the item from the list, but the item will no longer appear in your Current Price List. Don't delete the item or replace it with a new item. You would need the data later in processing your records to generate reports.

9. When a client no longer does business with you, trim down your Active Clients selection list by deactivating his account. This does not delete his records on file. It merely removes his name in your Active Clients selection list. Do not delete a client or unnecessarily change entries in your Clients file because you need the information for your long-term records and for generating accurate reports.

10. Avoid unnecessarily opening, editing, or replacing your files on the directory or folder that contains your data (for example C:\VS10 for version 1.0) using compatible software other than DMS Point of Sale. This may damage the structure of your data files and render them unusable, inaccessible or unrecognizable to the DMS Point of Sale software.

Error Messages

Large software packages like DMS Point of Sale are not guaranteed to be error-free. Occasionally, certain "bugs" (programming error) may come up as you use the software.

For us to specifically determine the problem, a reference code appears on the screen if there is such an error. The following is an example:

Your POS data are vital source of reliable information in making crucial business decisions. So, ensure that your computer system is properly maintained, and that backup files are regularly obtained and secured. To further guard your valuable data, connect your computer to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit provided with a surge protector to protect it from the harmful effects of changes in electrical power.

(L/N is short for "License Number")

Before doing so, however, make sure that the error is not due to the following:

1) A database file is currently used by a compatible software like MS Excel or MS Access.

2) A database file has been deleted from the database (possibly by accident or due to a virus).

To avoid committing errors arising from these actions, don't unnecessarily open, edit or replace files on the directory or folder that contains your data (for example C:\VS10 for version 1.0) using compatible software other than DMS Point of Sale.

Also, if you are using Windows Vista, be sure that the desktop shortcut icon you are using is set to run "as an administrator" (read DESKTOP SHORTCUT ICON in the online User Guide for details).

Occasionally, other error messages (which are not due to programming errors) may also appear on the screen. You should correct these errors by yourself.

Cannot allocate screen map
Insufficient memory is available to run the software.

Cannot append from password protected file
The database file you are attempting to append is encrypted (some software versions only.)

Cannot create file (XXXX1102)
The operating system has returned an error indicating that a new file cannot be created. The inability to create a new file may be the result of a full disk or directory.

Cannot create program workspace

Cannot open file (XXXX1101)
The software cannot open a file being accessed. The file may be used by another software.

Cannot run on MS-DOS before version 3.0
Loaders and EXE files cannot run under MS-DOS version 3.0 or earlier.

Cannot write to a read-only file (XXXX0111)
An attempt was made to write to a file that was created or accessed for read-only purposes.

Display device not supported
The display device or monitor you are using is not supported by the software. Use a monitor that supports VGA display mode (50 lines).

File access denied (XXXX1705)
An attempt was made to write to a file which is write protected by the MS-DOS ATTRIB command. Please refer to your MS-DOS or Windows manual. It also occurs if a file being accessed by the software is used or currently open in another program.

An attempt was made to use or delete a file that is currently open. Make sure at no other software is using a file in your database.

File is read only (XXXX1718)
An attempt was made to write to a read only file.

File read error (XXXX1104)
An error was returned by the operating system while the software was attempting to read a file. Please refer to your MS-DOS or Windows manual.

File write error (XXXX1105)
An error is returned by the operating system while the software was attempting to write to a file. Most often, this error is the result of an attempt to write to a write-protected disk or diskette.

MS-DOS is unable to perform a file or hardware operation. Refer to your MS-DOS or Windows manual.

Invalid path or file name (XXXX0202)

Not enough disk space (XXXX1160)
The operating system has returned an error to the software indicating that there is no room on the disk to contain the data from the latest WRITE command. Please refer to your MS-DOS or Windows manual.

Your computer does not have enough memory to open a file or additional database files. Close other programs that are currently running and try again.

Operating system memory error (XXXX1012)

This is not a standalone program

Other Messages

Computer System Date

The error message "SYSTEM DATE ERROR" appears on the screen when you make an attempt to use the software with your computer's system date set earlier than the software's Installation Date. When this happens, the software closes, and you should correct your computer's system date before re-starting the software.

Computer System Time

The error message "SYSTEM TIME ERROR" may show when you change or adjust your computer's time to an earlier time while the software is still running. When this occurs, the software closes, and you must re-start the software.

When the Folders C:\VSXX or C:\VPXX Already Exists

During installation, a brief message "Extended Error" may appear on the screen. It occurs when C:\VSXX or C:\VPXX already exists in your hard drive and has files whose names are different from the new files being created. The software maintains the said files (but shows the abovementioned message), and creates the usual folders and files.

This "error" is not serious and doesn't affect your system. It is, however, recommended that the said directories be first removed before you install the software. Also, do not save any file that you create with another software or program in the directory C:\VSXX.

Log-On Session

Sometimes, the message "YOUR LOG-ON SESSION HAS EXPIRED" may appear on the screen. This should not cause an alarm, because it is not an error.

Each time you launch the software, your log-on session is limited until midnight of the day you log on. When the software senses that your computer's system date already deviates from your log-on date, the software performs a log-on closing routine and shows on the screen the message "YOUR LOG-ON SESSION HAS EXPIRED". This is not an error. You only need to re-start the software for another log-on session.

In view of the above, changing the system date of your computer while a log-on session is in progress will cause the software to perform the said routine. However, if the system date is set earlier than the Installation Date, the error message "Computer system date is set earlier than the Installation Date" appears on the screen and a similar routine is executed.
